Camp Habitat 2020 has ended
Welcome to Camp Habitat 2020!

We’re exploring a new way to conference and network with each other this year, and that involves some cool new technology!

Here on Sched, which we used for last year’s in-person Camp Habitat, you’ll be able to learn about sessions, speakers, and sponsors. When you buy your tickets through Eventbrite HERE, you’ll then be directed to Sched, where you will select the sessions that you would like to attend with the tickets in your package. This is a critical step, because the rosters for those courses will get an email with the link to get into the class no later than 24 hours before the scheduled time.

The conference will be conducted via a platform called Remo. You can learn more about Remo here: https://remo.co/remo-101/. You’ll have an opportunity to get your account set up prior to your seminars. Sara will lead Remo set-up "Office Hours" in the days prior to the conference starting so that you’re ready to go on the day. Keep an eye out for an email with a link to those Office Hours the week before the conference, as well as additional information and tutorials on how to use the platform.

If you have any questions about Remo or Sched, email Sara at sara@habitatnc.org.

Re-envisioning Philanthropy in a Pandemic
Within this time of crisis, we also find silver linings. One of the bright spots is greater acceptance of trying out new ideas. Are you struggling to move beyond the traditional concepts and usual activities of fundraising? This session sets the stage for understanding the life-cycle of philanthropy in the pandemic, and is designed to help you re-envision how you fundraise and build philanthropic support, as well as to nurture this phase as a professional growth opportunity. Beginning with an exploration of the most recent shifts in giving trends and perceptions from the perspectives of both donors and development professionals, we will highlight fundraising trends, addressing the impact of the pandemic on giving, and challenging some assumptions. Then we will tackle the transition from the initial phase of the response to the pandemic with closings and canceled events to the recovery phase including donor communications changes, new forms of donor relations, and the increased use of digital tools. And finally, look toward the rebuilding phase to come with discussion and idea exchanges with new best practices thinking.

Building Communities through Culture & Creativity
Can we build communities using shelter as a catalyst that causes sustainable, transformational change? Yes we can! Although not easy this can be accomplished through seeking to understand, creatively engaging, and willingly listening and learning. To create the needed environment and build community we must think and see outside of the box while capitalizing on community strengths that have shown to be productive, consistent and long lasting. By incorporating Habitat for Humanity's Quality of Life Framework with innovative methods, we can understand barriers to resident participation and how community engagement and empowerment can be implemented in a way that meets Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. In turn, creating sustainability and resiliency that helps neighborhoods identify and reach their unified vision, while improving their own quality of life. Let’s talk about what it truly means to revitalize a community and how to overcome struggles using strengths.

Shared Appreciation - Not As Simple As You Think
Given rapidly rising property values and the temptation for Habitat homeowners to "cash out" after just a few years in their new home, Habitat affiliates all over the country have instituted, or are thinking of doing so, some form of a Shared Appreciation Agreement between them and the homeowner.  One might think that a simple and standard way should exist for all affiliates to adopt but, it seems there are as many ways of sharing appreciation as there are affiliates.  And, the way in which an affiliate chooses to share appreciation is commonly one of the most hotly debated decisions to come before a Board of Directors.  This session will look at why shared appreciation agreements came about, the various methodologies used by affiliates all over the country, other ways of achieving the same thing, and the philosophical balance between wealth generation for the homeowner and additional revenue for the affiliate.

Plenary Panel: Mergers and Dissolutions
In a difficult time, affiliates might find that reimagining how they operate could enable them to help more families. This moderated discussion will feature the executive directors of three NC Habitat affiliates that have absorbed or merged with neighbors: Laura Belcher of Habitat of the Charlotte Region, Isaac Kerns of Hometown Habitat, and Ron Gunter of Fayetteville Area Habitat.

Questions that they will consider include: What were the driving factors that led to consideration of a merger or series of dissolutions that eventuated in consolidation and regionalization? What have they done or what are they considering doing in order to consolidate their new identity as a more regional organization, in terms of communication & marketing, a fuller and regional representation on the board or staff, etc? What are the primary benefits as they understand them now or anticipate them in future? What are the drawbacks to be on the watch for?

Adapt to Now, Plan for the Future
You've heard it said that the only constant is change. This has never been more true recently as our organizations and communities have managed the changing effects of a global pandemic. How then, under these conditions, can an organization begin to make plans for its future? How can we evaluate the current ocean in which we are swimming and create a plan and strategy that is flexible and adaptable to future waves from many different directions?

While this time is unique, effective planning and goal setting efforts should always consider the many potential external changes facing an organization. In this session, affiliates will be encouraged to think creatively about current and future challenges facing their organization.  Leaders will then learn to develop a clear direction and concise priorities not only for the organization as a whole but also for each individual team member. These takeaways can have an immediate and significant impact on your organization as you create robust and agile strategies to move forward effectively.

Community Engagement for Faith Groups and Developing Faith Coalitions
Faith congregations play an integral role in the health and vitality of communities and are natural allies in Habitat’s mission. In this session, active participants will discover promising community engagement strategies to involve faith groups beyond the traditional-build model.  Examples from neighborhood revitalization projects to special projects focused on more vulnerable groups within our communities (i.e. elderly, single parents, disabled) will be discussed, and session participants will begin action planning to implement new community engagement strategies.
